SEX WORKERS IN INDIA CHANGE THE GAME WITH CELLPHONES

In Mumbai, India, Sex Workers with cell phones are steering customers away from brothels as they learn to run private operations on their own. The India government on the other hand claims the Sex Workers new found independence may cost them their lives as the spread and prevention of H.I.V could go undocumented.

Saggurti Niranjan, an associate with the population council’s HIV and AIDS program says “the place where sex happens turns out to be an important H.I.V prevention point.” While his point is understood, I still don’t agree that having brothels and forcing Sex workers to work only in zoned areas can control and eliminate H.I.V.         Although studies have shown Sex Workers who work in brothels enforce condom usage more than the cell phone entrepreneurs, I think establishing clinics that provide health services and AIDS awareness for Sex Workers is a better course of action to take.

The AIDS epidemic hit India in 1986 and was predicted to reach 25 million cases by the year 2010. I’m happy to report that India fell way short of that number, having only 1.5 million AIDS cases as of August 2012. Although Indian women are known to have fewer sex partners than women in other countries, a lot of credit goes to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for providing resources to Sex Workers and other high risk groups.

All in all, cell phones help India’s Sex Workers keep more money for themselves, so I’m all for it. Technology is the real game changer, so all Sex Workers beware! Make it your business to attend the upcoming (CES) Consumer Electronics Show convention held every year in Las Vegas during the first week of January. The more you know the more your pockets grow!
