Indoor and Outdoor Tanning Tips

Indoor-Tanning

$WTR recently sat with one of New York’s most famous dermatologist to the stars and listened to him explain why we should stay off the beds- the tanning beds!!

There has been much controversy associated with tanning beds in the recent years. They have been linked to the most dangerous form of skin cancer (Melanoma). During indoor and outdoor tanning, two types of ultra violet lights are present. The most typical being UVB or white light and the other type UVA, also known as black light. We receive plenty of UVB as well as UVA when outdoors. The more common UVB (white light) is associated with wrinkles, leathery skin and other forms of aging skin including but not limited to pigmented sun spots.

Though melanoma is not linked to UVB, less serious skin cancers do occur, such as Basal Carcinoma and Squamous cell Carcinoma. UVA is called black light and causes the most deadly of all cancers Melanoma. It’s called black light but is really bluish black in color. Most tanning beds are illuminated with black lights (UVA).

UVB is greater in the summer months and much higher in southern latitudes such asFlorida, theCaribbeanand other tropical destinations. UVA is found in equal amounts throughout the world year-round. Use sunscreen of 30 SPF or greater to protect your skin against harmful rays. Make sure the bottle lists UVA protection. UVB protection is provided by the SPF representation. No such thing exists for UVA. A new chemical called Avobenzone has been created for UVA. It protects the skin against the entire range of the sun’s UVA rays, so be on the lookout for it when purchasing sunscreen products.

Both outdoor natural tanning and tanning indoors are harmful to your skin. The good news is there is a safer alternative. The safest method of tanning would be to use a good commercial bronzing agent and avoid outdoor tanning and tanning beds altogether.

For optimum skin care I recommend the Dr. Wexler skin care products available at all Bathand Body Works throughout the country. Being a smart consumer is one way to ensure your skin gets the proper treatment it deserves. At any given time your skin is your most exposed body part. All women, especially those in the sex industry, know that it is imperative that your skin shines a healthy happy glow.
