ARIZONA- THE BURRITO STATE

Chimichanga-2

Phoenix Arizona is considering legislation to make the fried burrito, professionally known as the “chimichanga”, the states’ official food. Burritos have been a staple of Mexican cuisine for centuries but who actually fried the first one has become legendary folklore. Macayo’s Mexican Kitchen in Phoenix is the driving force behind the legislation.

The CEO of the company, Sharisse Johnson, went on record saying her deceased father Woody created the chimichanga around 1946 after putting unsold burritos from his restaurant into a deep fryer and selling them the next day. Others dispute this claim. Monica Flin, owner of El Charro Café restaurant in Tucson, Arizona has also put in her claim as the inventor. Both establishments have come together and launched the Check Yes for Chimi campaign, collecting signatures to present the petition to Arizona Legislature.

The “chimi” as it is affectionately known, is a delicious overstuffed burrito with meat or vegetable fillings of your liking smothered in mouth- watering guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream or any other craving your heart desires. If you visit Arizona and want the real deal, pick up a “chimi” from Arizona- the unofficial “chimi state”.
